Hi everyone, welcome to my blog.

[Where it all begins……]

My name is Chen Feng, you can also call me Lyz. I was born in Fujian, a coastal province in China. home to various tourist attractions, including four UNESCO World Heritage Sites and is famous for oolong tea (Tieguanyin 铁观音and Da Hong Pao 大红袍).  I moved to Singapore at the age of 9, it was quite a daunting experience for a child living in a totally foreign country, struggling to build a sense of belonging, and succeeding in not feeling like a stranger everywhere. At my current stage of life, I have categorized myself as a third-culture kid.

Mount Wuyi, Fujian

I am currently a Year 2 student pursuing a degree in Computer Science(Big Data). I graduated from Republic Polytechnic with a Diploma in Materials Science, specializing in Biomaterials.  Apart from school, I work in the financial service industry where I work closely with clients to help them better understand their assets and what they want those assets to do for them in the short/long term, and provide advice in achieving their financial goals. In my free time, I will also read articles published on the ‘The Business Times’, so to keep myself up to date with the current market outlook.

[Why Computer Science?]

I developed my interest in computing during secondary school and I was in a dilemma over which course (IT vs Applied Science) to enrol in after N level as my dream was to be a medical researcher.  In the end, I choose the Applied Science path.

I personally believe life will be stagnant without changes, changes are inevitable, it is a necessary element in life, and things are changing every minute, every second. Nobody can stop the world from changing nor can one foresee what will occur.  Therefore, I decided to try out something new (Computing), about which I had zero background knowledge.

The reason that I chose Big Data is that Big Data has bloomed and become one of the hottest subjects in the world of technology due to its enormous potential in the past few years. As companies have started relying more and more on large amounts of data to shape strategies and drive business decisions. The demand for Big Data professionals with this particular skill set is on the rise but there is still a huge deficit of these people in the market. So, I believe this will create a vast job opportunity in the future as almost every industry (finance, IT, automobiles, logistics, etc) uses Big Data analytics to bring useful insights and outcomes to stay competitive. Most importantly, this course will increase my employability.

[Hobbies]

I genuinely enjoy watching anime, Thai, and Chinese dramas and documentaries (Al Jazeera, DW Documentary, VICE, etc.), and I listen to true crime podcasts (Rotten Mango, Ghost Maps etc) whenever I am traveling to school or work. Besides those indoor hobbies, I love hiking too, where I can enjoy nature.

[Music]

I enjoy listening to a variety of music; it allows me to appreciate diverse styles and perhaps discover a new favourite genre. Music is a huge part of my life; it has the power to alleviate my mood and connects with me spiritually.

*PS, my current favourite genre is Thai pop 😊

  1. Hi Lyz! I am also pursuing a degree in Computer Science (Big Data), just starting my first term for my first year, and also entering without any background knowledge.

I agree that change is inevitable, therefore we should put ourselves in a position that arms us with the necessary skillsets for the next Industrial Revolution. It is not an easy path for us to pursue, especially without background knowledge, but I believe growth will happen when we push ourselves beyond our comfort zone.

I also enjoy watching documentaries which is not as common a hobby as I hoped it would be. The CNA Insider program also does a good job covering topics regionally.

See you in class, and all the best for your financial advisory career too!

  2. Hi Lyz! I like the visuals you’ve used for this blog post. I find it really entertaining and fun. I like anime too and I think you’re a really outgoing individual with a myriad of interests that most people wouldn’t have! Your genre of music is also unique and I respect your decision to join a degree that is outside of your comfort zone. I hope you grow during this journey as you explore the unknown. I wish you all the best for your academic journey here in SIM and hope to see you around in class!

  3. Hi Lyz. I am a year 2 student pursuing a degree in Computer Science Big Data too. I think I have seen you before in our previous class, glad to see familiar faces again! You were admirable for taking the leap and starting something completely new. I actually agree that Big Data is one of the hottest subject right now as data constantly flow in and out, it is important to maintain standards for data quality. I like Thai pop too, and Thai food especially! I hope you are enjoying and having fun with technology so far! See you in class next week.

  4. Hi Lyz! We have really a lot of common ground. I was also born in Fujian. I moved to Singapore at the age of 8 which was slightly earlier than you. I know what it feels like to live in a foreign country. However, I believe that after so many years of living in Singapore, you have assimilated into Singapore’s lovely culture.

After visiting your blog, I listened to some of the Thai pop songs you shared. It was amazing!!! Usually, I only listen to English and Chinese songs, but now, Thai songs will be added to my favorite list.

It is really nice meeting you. Perhaps, you can try out a restaurant at Yishun called 兴化美食. You would be able to find the taste of Home(Fujian) there.
