[Where it all begins……]
My name is Chen Feng, you can also call me Lyz. I was born in Fujian, a coastal province in China. home to various tourist attractions, including four UNESCO World Heritage Sites and is famous for oolong tea (Tieguanyin 铁观音and Da Hong Pao 大红袍). I moved to Singapore at the age of 9, it was quite a daunting experience for a child living in a totally foreign country, struggling to build a sense of belonging, and succeeding in not feeling like a stranger everywhere. At my current stage of life, I have categorized myself as a third-culture kid.

Mount Wuyi, Fujian
I am currently a Year 2 student pursuing a degree in Computer Science(Big Data). I graduated from Republic Polytechnic with a Diploma in Materials Science, specializing in Biomaterials. Apart from school, I work in the financial service industry where I work closely with clients to help them better understand their assets and what they want those assets to do for them in the short/long term, and provide advice in achieving their financial goals. In my free time, I will also read articles published on the ‘The Business Times’, so to keep myself up to date with the current market outlook.
[Why Computer Science?]
I developed my interest in computing during secondary school and I was in a dilemma over which course (IT vs Applied Science) to enrol in after N level as my dream was to be a medical researcher. In the end, I choose the Applied Science path.
I personally believe life will be stagnant without changes, changes are inevitable, it is a necessary element in life, and things are changing every minute, every second. Nobody can stop the world from changing nor can one foresee what will occur. Therefore, I decided to try out something new (Computing), about which I had zero background knowledge.
The reason that I chose Big Data is that Big Data has bloomed and become one of the hottest subjects in the world of technology due to its enormous potential in the past few years. As companies have started relying more and more on large amounts of data to shape strategies and drive business decisions. The demand for Big Data professionals with this particular skill set is on the rise but there is still a huge deficit of these people in the market. So, I believe this will create a vast job opportunity in the future as almost every industry (finance, IT, automobiles, logistics, etc) uses Big Data analytics to bring useful insights and outcomes to stay competitive. Most importantly, this course will increase my employability.
[Hobbies]
I genuinely enjoy watching anime, Thai, and Chinese dramas and documentaries (Al Jazeera, DW Documentary, VICE, etc.), and I listen to true crime podcasts (Rotten Mango, Ghost Maps etc) whenever I am traveling to school or work. Besides those indoor hobbies, I love hiking too, where I can enjoy nature.
